Sennheiser has announced that its unique Ambeo Smart Headset is now available. The company previewed this unique device at CES 2017, hailing it as a leap forward in content creation.

Basically, this headset uses omnidirectional microphones that are integrated in its earpieces in order to make 3D binaural recordings, which replicate the direction of sounds and the natural spatial characteristics of the recording location.

When played back on ordinary stereo headphones.

As Sennheiser details:

“When played back on any pair of headphones, the recorded audio simulates the way sounds are heard naturally by the ears, recreating a lifelike high-fidelity audio experience that places the listener directly within the captured sound field. The effect can convincingly transport the listener to any locale, from a bustling city block to a secluded spot in the wilderness, and is a powerful complement to high-definition video.”

The Ambeo headset records audio directly onto iOS devices using the Apple Lightning connector, and it also integrates with the standard iOS camera app in order to allow the storing of binaural audio with the video. An Android version is also planned, but will be released at a later date.

The Ambeo Smart Headset retails for $300, and is up for grabs at online and physical retailers.
