FIFA World Cup 2018 Will Be Broadcast In 4K UHD

The entire event. FIFA have confirmed that the entire World Cup 2018 will be available in 4K UHD, and all 64 games at the football, or soccer, what have you, tournament will be shot in this format.

The sports body revealed this while announcing its plans for Media Rights Licensees — the organizations that will broadcast the tournament set to take pace in Russia next year.

A total of 37 cameras will record proceedings, along with an additional 8 super slow-mo cameras, a cable camera and a cineflex heli-cam, thereby offering broadcasters a choice of multiple broadcast formats from a single production chain.

Throw in HDR into the mix, and FIFA guarantees improved image quality regardless of the format the individual Licensees ultimately choose to broadcast the event in.

FIFA also stated that its 4K UHD productions will benefit from immersive audio, though the details of the specific audio broadcast formats have not yet been revealed, and are forthcoming. We will probably have a better idea of this closer to when the tournament starts.

The entire AV industry is currently involved in format wars for supremacy in the 4K UHD space.

Technologies like Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are competing with other similar, immersive audio and video standards, as device manufacturers scramble to include support for these on their hardware devices like AV receivers, televisions, and media players.

FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia starts on June 14, 2018.
